GC-MS Analysis and Antimicrobial Activities of Alkaloid Extracts of Tinospora Cordifolia

Abstract

The goal of this study is to provide current information on the various secondary metabolite classes as well as experimental evidence of antibacterial activity against a wide range of pathogens. Tinospora cordifolia leaves belong to the family Menispermaceae and identified as heart leaves Moonseed. Invitro antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger was studied by Agar well diffusion method with various concentrations. GC- MS analysis was performed to identify major bioactive compounds present in the extracts. The GC – MS analyses revealed the presence of 25 compounds in the ethanol extract and 25 compounds in the leaf extract composition. The antimicrobial analysis revealed that the extract had a strong inhibitory activity against C.albicans among the pathogens tested, with the highest zone of inhibition being 30 mm at a concentration of 100 mg/ml. Our findings indicate that Tinospora cordifolia leaf extract can be used in traditional medicines to treat a variety of diseases
