Evaluation of in vitro Antidiabetic Activity of Aqueous Seed Extract of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L)

Abstract

Defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both leads to the metabolic disorder called diabetes mellitus. It increases the risk for many serious health problems and the development of diabetes mellitus leads to specific pathology occurs in retina, renal glomerulus and peripheral nerve. So, the goals of treatment are to prevent complications and organ damages. The therapeutic approach to reduce the postprandial rise in blood glucose level can be achieved by the inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase involved in the carbohydrate digestion process. Herbal treatment is considered as very safe and less side effects when compare to synthetic drugs. Hence, the present study deals with evaluation of in vitro antidiabetic activity of aqueous seed extract of C.tetragonoloba (L). The aqueous seed extract was delved into α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory assay for their anti-hyperglycemic potential. IC50 value for α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition were found to be 244.57μg/ml and 205.66μg/ml respectively. The results revealed that the aqueous seed extract possesses significant inhibitory action on both α-amylase and α-glucosidase in a dose dependent manner as compared to control.  Due to the presence of flavonoids, saponins and tannins in this extract may exhibit this inhibitory activity. Hence, this report suggests that it can be an effective lead compound against diabetes.
