Gonad Biochemical Profile Alteration by Chlorpyrifos in Freshwater Fish Channa punctatus (Funded Work)

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is an organophosphorus pesticide, commonly used in domestic and agricultural areas because of its wide spectra pesticide effect. This study was made to study the effect of CPF on Channa punctatus by measuring gonad tissue’s glycogen, protein, total lipid and lipid profile. Adult fish were exposed to different concentrations of Hilban(R) (20% EC CPF) for 24 h to get the LC50. The sublethal concentration (1/3rd and 1/10th of LC50 for three days and seven days respectively) tested for duration study. Among biochemical profiles, in testis, a decrease in carbohydrate content was higher followed by protein and total lipid, whereas in the ovary, a decrease in protein content was higher followed by carbohydrate and total lipid. It represents main biochemical component of gonad that severly damaged by CPF and trigger related hazardous effects. The level of lipid fractions was declined in testis as well as ovary with an increase of CPF concentration. Lipid and lipid fractions are important in hormonal synthesis and normal physiology of gonad. These results support that the organophosphate pesticide not only leads to mortality (immediate effect) but by manipulating gonad biochemical profile it may influence generations as tempering in gamete quality (long-term effect).
