Evaluation and Characterization of Probiotic Properties of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Mango Pulp

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that, when ingested in adequate amounts, provide health benefits to the host. The strain most frequently used as probiotic is lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacterium. The effective probiotic isolated from mango pulp were investigated for its survival capacity (acid and bile salt tolerance), inhibition of pathogens and antibiotic susceptibility. Totally fifty strains were isolated from mango pulp. Catalase test and Gram’s staining was carried out for the strains. Catalase negative and Gram positive rods and cocci were selected and subjected to pH conditions 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 and bile concentration of 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1%. Mango probiotic (MP) showed good antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus). Antibiotic sensitivity test was carried out against antibiotics in which MP strains were sensitive to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, erythromycin, kanamycin, ciprofloxacin, streptomycin and gentamicin whereas resistance to nalidixic acid. Therefore, our study suggests that the lactic acid bacteria strains isolated from mango pulp could be considered as a potent probiotic candidate to promote human health.
