Abstract

Stroke is one of the most common and leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Stroke is the third common cause of death in the world after coronary heart disease and cancer, especially in the elderly. Many risk factors have been identified for the development of acute cerebrovascular disease like diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, smoking, obesity, etc. Uric acid is an end product of purine metabolism. Various studies have shown a correlation between the levels of uric acid and acute cerebrovascular disease, although the role is still controversial. The aim of the paper is 1. To study the levels of serum uric acid in acute ischemic stroke.2. To determine the prognostic significance of the levels of serum uric acid in acute ischemic stroke. The study population comprised of 50 patients with new onset stroke, at Sree Balaji Medical College & Hospital, Chennai. Serum uric acid levels were drawn at the time of admission. The collected data were analysed with IBM.SPSS statistics software. The mean serum uric acid levels were higher in stroke patients. Stroke patients with elevated uric acid levels had a poor outcome. Serum uric acid levels have a prognostic significance in the outcome of acute ischemic stroke patients. In acute ischemic stroke, uric acid can be considered as a biochemical marker of oxidative stress.
