Effect Of Ga3 On In Vivo Seed Germination Of An Economically Important Forest Tree Gmelina Arborea Roxb.
Keywords:
Gmelina arborea, GA3 treatment, in vivo seed germinationAbstract
The species Gmelina arborea is an economically important forest tree . The wood of this species is very valuable for making furniture, general carpentry and packages and also used for constructions in place of teak wood. This plant has also medicinal value in Ayurvedic formulations for treating various diseases. In the present investigation, G.arborea seeds were treated with 500 – 3000ppm and 1-4% GA3 by giving different time intervals (12-72hrs). The percentage of seed germination has been found to be enhanced gradually from 500 - 1000ppm and 1-2% GA3 treatment, later gradually decreased from 1000-3000ppm and 2-4% GA3 treatments. Maximum percentage of seed germination (85%) was observed at 1000ppm for 36 hrs GA3 treatment in seeds of G.arborea. The germinated seedlings after GA3 treatment were transfered to research field. This protocol is useful in rapid regeneration and multiplication of the species.
