<title><b>Preliminary study on "Nutritional composition of <i>Bambusa arundinacea</i> shoots grown in Andaman and Nicobar Islands"</b> </title>
lessThan i greaterThan Bambusa arundinacea lessThan /i greaterThan is one of the most arborescent bamboos species which are found in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Bamboo are the group of monocotyledonous natural fast growing giant arbores cent grass grows into a tall bamboo plant within three to four months and grows everywhere. They belong to the family lessThan i greaterThan Poaceae lessThan /i greaterThan , with subfamily lessThan i greaterThan Bambusoideae. Bamboo lessThan /i greaterThan has gained increased attention as an alternative crop with multiple uses and benefits such as shoot used for various purposes especially for preparing healthy food, medicines .Wood is used for mainly housing and furniture. Throughout the world there are more than 1200 species, belonging from 70 genera. Bamboo helps more than two billion people to meet their basic needs as they are widespread, renewable, productive, low cost, environment enhancing resources, which improves the life of rural area people. From centuries, bamboo shoots exhibit great potential and have remained one of the most highly palatable dishes in delicacies. For edible purposes young shoots of both running and clump forming bamboos are used. Fresh, fermented and roasted tender bamboo shoots comes under culinary treats. They are mostly consumed as vegetables, pickles, salads and in many other forms in different countries. After rainy season, usually bamboo shoots emerge and it is harvested after attaining the height of 20-30 cm. The aim of the study was to identify the chemical composition of bamboo shoot extracts. The physical analysis of our sample of bamboo with the weight 130.66±10.06 grams, length 27.33±2.51 cm, circumference 17±2 cm showed total edible portions 40±2 per 100 grams, moisture content 95.2±0.60% and ash content 0.94±0.02%. The nutritional composition has carbohydrate 5.6±2.08 grams, protein 3.06±1,71 grams, fat 0.02±0.03 grams, crude fiber 0.40±0.07 grams, vitamin - C 8.1±0.4 mg, iron 0.18±0.03 mg and phosphorus 66.66±4.16 mg. The percentage yield of the extracts has been observed to be high in methanolic extracts. Bioactive constituent analysis revealed the presence of steroids, terpenoids, fatty acids, tannins, saponins, anthocyanins, leucoanthocyanins, coumarins and emodins. The SDS gel showed presence of several bands which ranges from 48 to 75 KDa. The present study shows that bamboo shoots are a rich source of phytochemicals and can be utilized for several therapeutic purposes. Anthocyanins are the human immune system which work more efficiently to protect against viral infections and viricidal effect. Coumarin and saponins has the ability to scavenge free radicals. Emodins are well known for anticancer, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Tannins inhibit the fungal growth as well as it retard the growth of yeasts, bacteria and viruses.Terpenoids have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Steroids are related with sex hormones.
