<title>AMELIORATIVE POTENTIAL OF GLYCOSMIS PENTAPHYLLA (RETZ.) DC IN INDUCED ARSENICOSIS IN RATS </title>
<abstract>Arsenic poisoning is one of the major causes of chronic human illness and mortality in Bengal Delta plain with limited treatment options.The present study was conducted to evaluate the ameliorating effect of  lessThan i greaterThan Glycosmis pentaphylla lessThan /i greaterThan  (Rutaceae) leaf extract against sodium arsenite (NaAsO lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan ) induced toxicity. Forty eight adult albino rats were divided into four groups viz.,G lessThan sub greaterThan 0 lessThan /sub greaterThan ,G lessThan sub greaterThan 1 lessThan /sub greaterThan ,G lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan  and G lessThan sub greaterThan 3 lessThan /sub greaterThan .Sodium arsenite was administered @ 4mg/kg daily in drinking water in groups G lessThan sub greaterThan 1 lessThan /sub greaterThan , G lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan  and G lessThan sub greaterThan 3 lessThan /sub greaterThan  for 90 days; the control group(G lessThan sub greaterThan 0 lessThan /sub greaterThan ) received water for 120 days.The G lessThan sub greaterThan 1 lessThan /sub greaterThan  group of animals received water, instead of arsenic during 91-120 days , while rats of group G lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan  and G lessThan sub greaterThan 3 lessThan /sub greaterThan  were orally treated with plant leaf extract at 320 mg/kg ( lessThan sup greaterThan 1 lessThan /sup greaterThan / lessThan sub greaterThan 10 lessThan /sub greaterThan  lessThan sup greaterThan th lessThan /sup greaterThan  LD lessThan sub greaterThan 50 lessThan /sub greaterThan ) and 160 mg/kg ( lessThan sup greaterThan 1 lessThan /sup greaterThan / lessThan sub greaterThan 20 lessThan /sub greaterThan  lessThan sup greaterThan th lessThan /sup greaterThan  LD lessThan sub greaterThan 50 lessThan /sub greaterThan ) respectively daily during the period. Analysis of arsenic concentrations in tissue samples,hair and faeces showed that treatment with  lessThan i greaterThan G. pentaphylla  lessThan /i greaterThan leaf extract significantly (p lessThan  0.05) reduced arsenic accumulation in tissues, hair and in faeces. A significantly (p lessThan  0.05) higher organo-arsenic fraction and lower arsenite and arsenate fraction was also observed in  lessThan i greaterThan G. lessThan /i greaterThan   lessThan i greaterThan pentaphylla lessThan /i greaterThan  leaf extract treated group(G lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan  &amp;G lessThan i greaterThan 3 lessThan /i greaterThan ). The study showed that oral treatment with  lessThan i greaterThan G.pentaphylla lessThan /i greaterThan  leaf extract could ameliorate induced arsenicosis.</abstract>
