IN VITRO ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY AND PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF SOME TRADITIONAL HERBS
Fourteen medicinal plants known as traditional herbs were investigated for lessThan i greaterThan in vitro lessThan /i greaterThan antibacterial activity against Gram-positive lessThan i greaterThan Enterococcus faecalis lessThan /i greaterThan and lessThan i greaterThan Staphylococcus aureus lessThan /i greaterThan and Gram-negative lessThan i greaterThan Salmonella typhimurium lessThan /i greaterThan , lessThan i greaterThan Klebsiella pneumoniae lessThan /i greaterThan and lessThan i greaterThan Escherichia coli lessThan /i greaterThan bacteria using disc diffusion method. The results of screening are encouraging as out of 14 plants, 11 plant extracts (Activity Profile 78.57%) showed antibacterial activity against one or more tested bacterial species. Eight extracts (Activity Profile 57%) inhibited the growth of lessThan i greaterThan S. aureus. E. faecalis lessThan /i greaterThan was the most susceptible bacteria inhibited by 11 plant extracts (Activity Profile 78.57%). Among screened plants only two species (Activity Profile 14%) i.e., lessThan i greaterThan Cassia spectabilis lessThan /i greaterThan and lessThan i greaterThan Lantana camara lessThan /i greaterThan were found active against lessThan i greaterThan E. faecalis, lessThan /i greaterThan lessThan i greaterThan S. aureus lessThan /i greaterThan and lessThan i greaterThan K. pneumonia lessThan /i greaterThan e and between these two species lessThan i greaterThan C. spectabilis lessThan /i greaterThan was found more effective antibacterial agent than lessThan i greaterThan L. camara lessThan /i greaterThan . Phytochemical analysis revealed presence of various phytoconstituents and thus validating their uses in various herbal remedies.
